Australian flutist Don Burrows, known for his deep fascination with Brazilian music and collaborations with artists such as Luiz Bonfá and The Galapagos Duck, released this first album under The Don Burrows Quartet name in 1966. The lineup features Ed Gaston (bass), George Golla (guitar), and John Sangster (vibraphone, percussion). While rooted in early jazz and cool jazz traditions, the album incorporates musical elements from Africa, the Caribbean, and Brazil, all while exuding the exotic mood and atmosphere reminiscent of Martin Denny or Les Baxter. Showcasing Burrows’ unique style—one that would later influence The Galapagos Duck, whose 1974 album Ebony Quill was featured in the guidebook Obscure Sound: The Eclectic Sanctuary of 640 Records—this record clearly demonstrates that his distinct musical identity had already been firmly established by the mid-1960s. A superb performance throughout, this is a highly recommended and beautifully executed album.
