A 1964 masterpiece by Horace Silver, one of Blue Note’s defining pianists and composers. The title track, “Song For My Father,” dedicated to Silver’s father of Portuguese descent, is an enduring classic, built on a relaxed Latin rhythm with a simple yet unforgettable piano riff and Joe Henderson’s tenor layered beautifully on top. From the exotically tinged “Calcutta Cutie” and the supple groove of “Que Pasa” to “The Kicker,” also known for Bobby Hutcherson’s great version, and the quietly melancholic “Lonely Woman,” this is a superb album that also works beautifully for DJ play with its Latin and modal flow. Japanese pressing released by King Records in 1977. Includes insert.
