Jaki Byard emerged as a member of the Charlie Mariano Group in the early 50's, and later played in the bands of Maynard Ferguson and Charles Mingus. In 1960, he formed his own leadership group and left many works for Prestige and New Jazz. This is his album released in 1966. It contains recordings of a live recording made in 1965 with a quartet with Joe Farrell (ts,ss), George Tucker (b), and Alan Dawson (ds,vb). The performance is full of groove, with Byard's very strong attack and nimble bouncing piano. B1, with Farrell on drums and Dawson on vibraphone, is also cool and nice. This is a US reissue, probably from the mid to late 70s.
