This is a double album produced under the artistic direction of Michael Mantler and released in 1968 as part of the "Jazz Composers Orchestra Association," co-founded by the renowned American jazz pianist Carla Bley and her second husband, Michael Mantler. The project gained fame for providing compositions to artists such as Art Farmer, Gary Burton, and Charlie Haden. The album features a plethora of exciting musicians including Cecil Taylor, Don Cherry, Roswell Rudd, Pharoah Sanders, Larry Coryell, and Gato Barbieri, among others. Notable musicians like Carla Bley, Steve Lacy, and Ron Carter, who embraced the concept of the ensemble, also contributed. The album showcases intense interplay within chaotic soundscapes. Standout solos by Don Cherry and Gato Barbieri on track A1, and Cecil Taylor on C1, are recommended for an initial listen. The booklet includes numerous photographs taken during the recording sessions, as well as scores. This particular release is a German pressing from 1980, manufactured by ECM, responsible for the European distribution license, and it boasts improved sound quality.
