Album released in 1966 by The Jazz Composer's Orchestra, a group organised by Mike Mantler and Carla Bley that brought together avant-jazz musicians active in New York City. Recorded live at Judson Hall in New York in 1964. Although the group had a fluid membership, this album features Paul Bley, Archie Shepp, Steve Lacy, John Tchicai, Milford Graves, Jimmy Lions, Steve Swallow, Kent Carter, Eddie Gomez, Robin Kenyatta, Barry Altschul and many more, the entire album is a spirited performance that shows first-hand the rise of the 60s loft jazz scene. Graves' tremendous drumming can be heard on A1.
