An album released in 1979 by Jamaican pianist Monty Alexander, hailing from the true heartland of reggae. Recorded as a trio with John Clayton on bass and Jeff Hamilton on drums, this session finds Alexander moving effortlessly through jazz standards by the likes of Milt Jackson, Duke Ellington, and Benny Goodman, alongside his own original compositions. Infused with subtle touches of soul and bossa nova, Monty’s light, articulate key touch produces a beautifully bright piano tone, delivering performance after performance of sheer elegance and swing. Even within a straight-ahead, modal jazz framework, the depth of groove on display is unmistakably Monty’s signature. Jeff Hamilton’s drumming is impeccably cool throughout. Highly recommended.
