This album was released in 1965 by The New York Art Quartet, a free jazz ensemble formed in 1964. The members of the ensemble have been changing in flux, but this recording features John Tchicai (as), Roswell Rudd (tb), Reggie Workman (b), and Milford Graves (b). The band plays original compositions by the members, Charlie Parker tunes, and standards, and although it is completely a group improvisation except for the theme, it is wonderful that it is very cohesive. The drumming by Graves, who I imagine had a great influence on Toshiyuki Tsuchitori, is superb and captivating from start to finish. This is a domestic release from the Fontana New Jazz Series by Nippon Phonogram in 1984.
