A leader album released in 1986 by Paul Bley, one of Canada’s most prominent jazz pianists, who has been active since the 1950s. Known for his contributions to the Ornette Coleman Quartet, the Jazz Composer's Orchestra, and numerous masterpieces with his own groups, this album features a quartet comprising John Scofield (g), Steve Swallow (b), and Barry Altschul (ds). It includes live recordings from a 1985 concert at Lush Life in New York. The album showcases Bley’s original compositions as well as pieces by Ornette Coleman, which he had performed previously. However, the arrangements here are lighter and more lucid, a departure from Bley’s characteristic melancholic atmosphere. Notably, Carla Bley’s track B5 is performed in an exceptionally uplifting manner. Overall, the performances are outstanding—highly recommended for a listen.
