This is an album released in 1979 by the jazz trio TOK, consisting of Takashi Kako (piano), Oliver Johnson (drums), and Kent Carter (bass), under ECM's sub-label JAPO. It is likely the first instance of a Japanese artist being featured on an ECM release. Unlike most ECM productions led by Manfred Eicher, this album was produced by Steve Lake. Highlights include the intense yet beautiful piano touch of Takashi Kako and the powerful drumming of Johnson, honed through his work with the Steve Lacy band, showcased on A1. On B1, Kako's piano displays a deep, shadowy nuance that sets it apart from the style of Paul Bley. Meanwhile, B3 delivers an avant-garde Afro-free jazz experience with Johnson's toy piano and cryptic vocals. The album is a breathtaking display of tightly wound, tension-filled interplay.
