Released in 1968, this album is by American jazz saxophonist Tom Scott, who later formed and found success with the fusion group the L.A. Express, while also appearing on recordings by countless renowned artists ranging from Pink Floyd and Joni Mitchell to Whitney Houston. Scott leads a quartet featuring Mike Lang on piano, Chuck Domanico on bass, and John Guerin on drums. Highlights include the soul-jazz number A1, with its funky rhythm section in 7/4 and Scott’s fiery blowing, and A2, whose wonderfully floating groove seems to anticipate Marion Brown’s Vista and Pharoah Sanders’ Thembi. A masterpiece filled throughout with exceptional tracks that reveal Scott’s deep passion for Black music. B1, dedicated to John Coltrane, is also fantastic. Original US pressing.
