The second volume in Toru Takemitsu Film Music from the Original Soundtracks, a ten-volume series presenting music from 48 films scored by Toru Takemitsu, one of Japan’s greatest composers and a figure whose work extended far beyond the boundaries of contemporary classical music. Throughout his career, Takemitsu explored an extraordinary range of forms, from radically experimental composition and film scores to popular song. This volume features music from several films directed by Masaki Kobayashi, including Moeru Aki (1978), whose soundtrack is also a favorite at our store, Karamiai (1962), Nihon no Seishun (1968), and Kaseki (1975), as well as music from Toichiro Narushima’s 1973 film Seigenki. The entire album is superb, but particular highlights include A2, where Takemitsu—deeply interested in jazz during the 1960s—ventures into a strikingly modern jazz ensemble with impeccable taste, and B1, whose latter half is especially captivating for its marimba playing a beautiful, soothing melody based on a traditional Japanese scale.
