Released in 1979 as the 12th volume of Victor's "Masterpieces of Contemporary Japanese Music 1500" series, this is a collection of eight compositions by Toru Takemitsu, a world-class Japanese musician. Side A includes "Piano Distance" and "Unabridged Rapid" performed by Yuji Takahashi, and "Son Calligraphy No. 1/3 for 8 Strings" by a string ensemble conducted by Hiroshi Wakasugi. Included are "Eclipse," an ensemble of classical Japanese and Western instruments, and "Mask for Two Flutes. On side B, Noteworthy is "Eclipse for Biwa and Shakuhachi" performed by Katsuya Yokoyama (shakuhachi) and Kinshi Tsuruta (biwa), a piece that beautifully embodies the modern sublimation of Japanese classical music that Toru Takemitsu pursued.
