This is the original soundtrack album for the movie "Tempyo No Iraka", composed by Toru Takemitsu, one of the greatest composers in Japan, who has taken on the challenge of composing music that transcends the boundaries of contemporary music and has a variety of experimental orientations. Adapted from a historical novel by Yasushi Inoue, the film depicts the fate of monks who traveled to China on a ship during the Tenpyo period in the first half of the 8th century when Emperor Shomu was on the throne. This is one of a masterpiece among Takemitsu's many film scores. 17 pieces in all, but you can appreciate the scale of the music by listening to the whole album at once. Highly recommended.
