An album released in 1980 by Toshirō Mayuzumi, one of the defining composers of postwar Japan, who in the early 1950s introduced musique concrète, electronic music, and the avant-garde to Japan and went on to release numerous compositions deeply informed by those movements. Issued as part of the Modern Japanese Music Masterpieces 1300 series, which surveys key works from Japan’s modern and contemporary canon. Side A features “Divertimento for Ten Instruments,” composed when Mayuzumi was just 19 years old, revealing a distinctly neo-classical approach. Side B presents “Prelude for String Quartet,” a celebrated work written in 1968 and widely known through performances by the LaSalle Quartet; this edition includes a fine performance by the Mari Iwamoto String Quartet.
