Recorded by American pianists Ursula Oppens and Frederic Rzewski—both known for their work in Nonesuch’s contemporary music series and for performing compositions by figures such as Morton Feldman, Alvin Curran, and Elliott Carter—this 1982 release features their performances of works by Anthony Braxton, the jazz reed player from Chicago’s AACM who has produced over a hundred compositions since the 1960s. Written for two pianists and recorded in 1980 at a studio in Milan, the piece unfolds through Braxton’s characteristic “language music system,” combining scored material and improvisation to create a curious, otherworldly soundscape. The result is a highly intriguing album, with Side A running 23 minutes and Side B extending to 26 minutes.
