A 1987 album featuring traditional music from Bulgaria, located on the Balkan Peninsula. The record brings together many of the country’s leading folk singers and musicians of the period, including Trio Bulgarka, featuring renowned vocalists Yanka Rupkina, Eva Georgieva, and Stoyanka Boneva, as well as the instrumental group Trakiiskata Troika and celebrated bagpipe player Kostadin Varimezov. The album offers a rich survey of Bulgarian traditional music, from the distinctive female choral singing that became internationally known in the 1980s through the “Bulgarian Voices” phenomenon, to the vibrato-rich sustained tones of the gaida bagpipe. Shaped over centuries through the interaction of Balkan traditions with musical cultures from neighboring regions including the Ottoman and broader Islamic world, Bulgarian folk music developed a highly individual character, and this album presents many of its fascinating forms.
Deadstock, unplayed copy, opened from its original shrink wrap at our store solely to check the condition. There is some vinyl hazing caused by the plastic inner sleeve, but it has no effect on playback.
