A 2LP set featuring live recordings from the “Free Jazz Festival / Inspiration & Power 14,” held over 14 nights at Art Theatre Shinjuku Bunka in 1973, with performances by Toshiyuki Miyama & New Herd Orchestra, Motoharu Yoshizawa, the Itaru Oki Quintet, Now Music Ensemble, Masahiko Togashi + Masahiko Sato, New Direction for the Arts led by Masayuki Takayanagi, Garando, and the Yosuke Yamashita Trio. From the orchestral force of Toshiyuki Miyama & New Herd, Motoharu Yoshizawa’s bass solo work stripped down to its extreme limits, the collective improvisation of the Itaru Oki Quintet, Takayanagi’s ferocious walls of sound, the tense duo performance by Masahiko Togashi and Masahiko Sato, to the explosive playing of the Yosuke Yamashita Trio, this historic recording captures a moment when Japanese jazz of the early 1970s was breaking away from imitation of overseas models and pushing toward its own original form of expression through a wide range of approaches. Very, very highly recommended. This is a reissue that was likely released in 1973, the same year as the first pressing.
