An album featuring court gamelan from Java, Indonesia, released in 1971 as part of the Explorer Series by the American label Nonesuch, known for its field recordings and ethnomusicology works. This recording captures the court gamelan performed at the Paku Alaman Palace in Yogyakarta, located in Central Java. The ensemble is centered around metallophones and other percussive instruments, accompanied by a wooden xylophone (gambang), a two-string bowed instrument (rebab), a bamboo flute (suling), three drums of varying sizes (kendang), a zither with multiple strings (celempung), a male vocal chorus, and female solo vocals. The gamelan's soft, delicate sound, played at a characteristically slow courtly tempo, resonates beautifully and creates a deeply soothing experience.
