Columbia (Japan) 1969
CLS 6100 (LP)
sleeve : EX(very slightly color-faded.)
media : VG+/VG+(some light noise and click noise. side B has one light hairline that does not affect to sounds.)
Released in 1969, this album features the works of Masakuni Kineya, who, having learned the techniques of nagauta and the knowledge of kabuki stage music from his father, the nagauta master Seishiro Kineya, went on after the war to study Western composition with Akihiro Norimatsu, pursuing a modern sensibility that brought together Japanese and Western music. Performances are by the Sanbonkai, a trio formed by the leading contemporary shakuhachi players Shizuo Aoki, Hozan Yamamoto, and Katsuya Yokoyama, who, while inheriting venerable traditions, expanded Japanese classical music through cross-genre composition and performance, gaining worldwide recognition. They are joined by Kohachiro Miyata and Tadao Sawai on 17-string koto. The album includes a shakuhachi solo that quietly depicts deep inner landscapes, a duet with unfolding rhythmic melodies, a fantasy-like work based on the melody of a Tsugaru folk song, a piece commissioned by the Sanbonkai, and a quartet enriched by the rhythms of the 17-string koto. It is a remarkable work that presents a new form of Japanese music, born from free and imaginative ideas unconstrained by the traditional framework of hogaku.
