The third release in the Musical Instruments of Japan series from Victor in 1973, this album focuses on the shakuhachi. It includes classical pieces and honkyoku from various schools such as the Kinpu, Myoan, Kinko, and Tozan schools. The selection also features the representative Hokkaido folk song for shakuhachi, “Esashi Oiwake,” the renowned koto piece "Rokudan" performed in an ensemble by the Kinko and Tozan schools, and “Taiwa Godai,” a modern piece composed by Makoto Moroi. This rich collection offers a comprehensive experience of honkyoku, gaikyoku, and contemporary music. Performers include Kofu Watanabe, Goro Yamaguchi, Shizuo Aoki, and Katsuya Yokoyama of the Kinko school; Kyohaku Takahashi of the Fuke school; Nyodo Jin of Nyodo-kai; and Hozan Yamamoto, Ichizan Hoshida, and Uzan Harato of the Tozan school, as well as Isamu Yashita of the Yashita school.
