A 1977 album released by New World Records, the non-profit label established in 1975 with support from the Rockefeller Foundation to document and preserve American music that commercial labels were unlikely to release. The album presents substantial recordings of contemporary works by leading composers and performers of the period, centered around Milton Babbitt and also featuring compositions by Leslie Bassett and Charles Wuorinen. Particularly noteworthy are Babbitt’s A1 and A4. A1 reconstructs a work originally composed in 1969 for soprano and piano in a version incorporating electronic tape, with an instrumental approach to the soprano voice emphasizing pitch, timbre, articulation, and rhythm, intertwined with piano and electronic sounds from tape. A4 is a work for piano and tape, with the electronic part created using the RCA Mark II Synthesizer at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center.

A1: Milton Babbitt “Phonemena”
A4: Milton Babbitt “Reflections”
