This is a double compilation album released in 1979 that provides an overview of the thriving avant-garde jazz scene that emerged in New York City during the 1960s. On Side A, you'll find four tracks recorded in 1964 by The New York Contemporary Five, featuring Archie Shepp on tenor saxophone, John Tchicai on alto saxophone, Ted Curson on trumpet, Ronnie Boykins on bass, and Sunny Murray on drums. Tracks B1 and B2 feature recordings from 1964 by the 7-Tette led by Bill Dixon on trumpet. Tracks B3 and C1 contain recordings made by the Marzette Watts Ensemble between 1968 and 1969. On Side C, you'll hear recordings from 1966 by a group led by Robert Pozer on drums, featuring Jimmy Garrison on bass, Mike Zwerin on trumpet and trombone, and Kathy Norris on cello. Tracks C5 and Side D showcase previously unreleased recordings made between 1962 and 1965 by a group led by Paul Bley, with Steve Swallow and Gary Peacock on bass, Paul Motian on drums, John Gilmore on tenor saxophone, and Pete La Roca on drums. All of these recordings capture significant moments in the history of cutting-edge jazz, offering a valuable glimpse into the evolution of this genre.
