Released in 1968 as part of Angel Records’ Music of Today series, this album features three significant works of contemporary composition. The program includes Iannis Xenakis’s “Herma”, written by the Greek composer who fought in the anti-Nazi resistance during WWII, later exiled to France, where he studied under architect Le Corbusier before emerging as a singular voice in both architecture and music. Also included is “Quatuor II” by Betsy Jolas, the Paris-born American composer who studied with Olivier Messiaen and went on to teach musical analysis, and “Archipel I” by André Boucourechliev, the Bulgarian-French composer’s landmark work. Xenakis’s Herma (A2) is performed in a solo piano interpretation by Georges Pludermacher, showcasing the composer’s mathematically-driven approach. Boucourechliev’s Archipel I (B1), later performed by Les Percussions de Strasbourg, is an expansive piece for two pianos and 54 percussion instruments—a large-scale, highly compelling work that makes this release especially memorable.
