Released in 1982 as part of Victor's Digital Superlative Sound series, which introduced the latest digital recording technology in the early 1980s, this album features performances of gamelan, the traditional music of the Indonesian island of Bali. One of the most recent gamelan performances, Gamelan Gong Kebyar, was created at the end of the 1910s, and of particular interest is A2, which is an accompaniment to a dance by three girls created over several generations at the court. The highlight of the piece is when the female chants are introduced, which, together with the narration, show the transformation of the girls into kings, queens and birds.
