Released in 1975, this compilation album features six selected tracks from the catalog of Whynot, a label produced by music critic Masahiko Yuh and responsible for a number of outstanding releases. The album includes one track each from vibraphonist Walt Dickerson’s Tell Us Only The Beautiful Things, pianist George Cables’ Why Not, Air Song by Air, the trio of Henry Threadgill, Fred Hopkins, and Steve McCall, Afrisong by pianist Muhal Richard Abrams, a central figure of Chicago’s AACM, pianist Joseph Bonner’s Triangle, and saxophonist Monty Waters’ The Black Cat. An excellent compilation that offers a valuable overview of the rare recordings released by Whynot, a label run with remarkable aesthetic vision even within the Japanese jazz scene of the time.
