An album released in 1970 as part of Crown Records’ Japanese National Music Series, featuring performances of matsuri-bayashi, traditional festival music that developed during the Edo period. The performances are by the Wakayama Taneo group, led by Taneo Wakayama, the head of the Wakayama school of Edo sato-kagura, which has been designated as an Intangible Cultural Asset by Tokyo. Side A presents the foundational pieces of matsuri-bayashi, repeating three sections titled “Yatai,” “Shōden,” and “Kamakura.” Side B features a suite arranged by Wakayama, played in five continuous sections. The recording quality is excellent, with the vibrant sounds of taiko drums and shinobue flutes resonating dynamically.
