This is the debut leader album by American pianist Walter Davis Jr., who rose to prominence in the early 1950s with Max Roach's group and later contributed to the groups of Dizzy Gillespie and Donald Byrd, as well as Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers. The album was released in 1959 on Blue Note and features a quintet with Donald Byrd (trumpet), Jackie McLean (alto saxophone), Sam Jones (bass), and Art Taylor (drums). All the compositions are Davis's own scores. Notable tracks include the memorable theme of the Rumba Jazz "B1," along with the entire album offering a delightful exploration of the typical style of hard bop. This is the Japanese reissue was released in 1989 as part of Toshiba EMI's "<Blue Note LP Last Reissue>" series.
