This is the 1984 masterpiece album by the American trumpeter Woody Shaw, known for his participation in sessions with groups like Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, Horace Silver Quintet, Joe Henderson Quintet, and leaving behind numerous masterpieces with his own groups. Recorded in a New York studio in 1974, this album features a stellar lineup of musicians, including Azar Lawrence on tenor and soprano saxophones, Steve Turre on trombone, Onaje Allen Gumbs on piano, Cecil McBee on bass, Victor Lewis on drums, Tony Waters on percussion, and Guilherme Franco on percussion. Notably, Buster Williams joins in on bass for tracks A1 and A2. The album covers a wide range of styles of jazz, from fiery hard bop to melodious Latin jazz, with a strong emphasis on ensemble playing and an emotional, spiritual jazz sensibility that incorporates elements of crossover. Shaw's trumpet work is particularly remarkable, with rich and vibrant tones. This album comes highly recommended as a must-listen for jazz enthusiasts.
