This is a masterpiece leader album released in 1973 by the American trumpeter Woody Shaw, who has participated in sessions with Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, Horace Silver Quintet, Joe Henderson Quintet, and many other groups, leaving numerous masterpieces with his own group as well. In addition to the renowned Henry Franklin (b) who has also left his mark on Black Jazz, the album features Emanuel Boyd (fl, ts), George Cables (p), and Woodrow Theus II (ds, per). Furthermore, Ramon Morris (ts) is featured on two tracks, and Bennie Maupin (ts) on one track. The album astonishes with its unique approach that blends avant-garde and elegance, as heard in the title track A1, the cool phrasing that maintains a sense of floating throughout B1, and the incorporation of trippy electric sounds in B2. It resonates with the electric jazz-funk pioneered by Miles Davis. Highly recommended.

A1: Song of Songs
B1: Love: For the One You Can’t Have
B2: The Awakening
