Released in 1981, this album is by American trumpeter Woody Shaw, who participated in sessions with numerous groups including Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, the Horace Silver Quintet, and the Joe Henderson Quintet, while also leaving behind many masterpieces with his own ensembles. The outstanding lineup features Gary Bartz on alto saxophone, Steve Turre on trombone, Mulgrew Miller on piano, Stafford James on bass, and Tony Reedus on drums. Highlights include A3, a Cole Porter composition performed with an exhilarating arrangement full of forward momentum and refreshing clarity, and B3, a groovy, gently swaying blues-jazz number co-written by Shaw and Ronnie Mathews. A superb album showcasing Shaw’s lustrous, soaring trumpet playing. Turre’s trombone is also fantastic. Original US Santa Maria pressing.
