Moonlight of Asia

Composer and synthesist Yoshitaka Azuma—active from the 1960s through the early ’70s as a member of the folk group Itsutsu no Akai Fusen, and later primarily engaged in music production for television and radio following the group’s dissolution—released this album in 1981. Issued as the first installment of his Asian Trilogy. Built on compositions that make extensive use of Asia’s characteristic pentatonic scales, and constructed through layered overdubs on the legendary Sequential Circuits Prophet-5, the record unfolds as deeply introspective synthesizer music. While stylistically reminiscent of Tangerine Dream, it is distinguished by melodic sensibilities unmistakably rooted in an Eastern aesthetic.
