Spanish early music ensemble Atrium Musicae was founded in 1964 by Gregorio Paniagua, one of Spain’s leading figures in early music research, known for his deep knowledge of historical instruments and for reconstructing early instruments based on iconographic sources. This album was released in 1978. The group also featured members such as his younger brother Luis Paniagua, a key figure in the Spanish contemporary/new age scene who incorporated Arab and Mediterranean classical music into modern forms, as well as Eduardo Paniagua. Taking as its point of departure the music-like notation depicted on the “Hell” panel of The Garden of Earthly Delights by the Dutch painter Jheronimus Bosch, who belonged to the Early Netherlandish school yet left behind a body of singular and fantastical works, the album presents reconstructed performances of secular songs, dances, and early-music materials from around the 15th to 16th centuries. Although rooted in early music, the record is filled throughout with strikingly fresh ideas that would later resonate with the Spanish experimental scene, making it a highly enjoyable listen from beginning to end. An outstanding work that vividly highlights Paniagua’s singular vision.
