Le Tar

An album released in 1980 from Harmonia Mundi's "Tradition Classique de l'Iran" series, which has produced numerous world music works. It features performances on the tar, a stringed instrument with a figure-eight shaped soundbox covered with a thin membrane stretched from ox heart and sheepskin, a long neck, and six metal strings plucked with a brass pick, and the zarb, a goblet-shaped single-headed drum carved from walnut or maple wood. The tar is played by Daryoush Tala’i, who has collaborated with Maurice Bejart and Michel Portal, among others, and the zarb is played by Djamchid Chemirani. Side A features a performance of "Dastgâh-e Shûr," the most important and fundamental system of "dastgâh" (melodic patterns/modes) in Iranian traditional music. Side B features a beautiful performance of "Dastgâh-e Mahûr," one of the main "dastgâh" in Iranian traditional classical music, which has a bright and majestic atmosphere similar to the major scale in Western music.
