American guitarist Jean-Paul Bourelly, who was active in New York as a member of the BluWave Bandits and performed with artists such as Elvin Jones and Pharoah Sanders, released his first leader album in 1987. After relocating to Europe in the 1990s, he went on to form African Boom Bop. Featuring Julius Hemphill and Andrew Cyrille, this debut album showcases Bourelly’s deep grounding in Afro-funk influenced by James Brown and Fela Kuti, blending driving electric guitar performances with funky rhythm sections, reggae grooves, and moody jazz-funk tracks. Recorded at Tonstudio Bauer, a favorite of ECM productions, and engineered by David Baker, the album stands out for its distinctly dry and stripped-down sound.
