The only album released by London-born singer Kay in 1979, produced by Jun Fukamachi, who was apparently also active at the time composing and arranging for commercials. Recorded in New York, the album features Fukamachi on keyboards alongside a seriously heavyweight cast from the US fusion scene at their peak, including David Sanborn (as), David Spinozza (g), Mike Mainieri (vb, mar), Will Lee (b), and Steve Jordan (ds), making this a properly lush, bubble-era gem. Highlights include the laid-back mid-tempo jazz-funk opener A1, written by Kay herself, and the Latin-flavoured disco cut B4. Kay’s charmingly rough-around-the-edges vocals are part of the appeal, but more than anything it’s the absolutely top-tier musicianship throughout that makes this record shine. Personal recommendation goes to A2, a stylish mellow number with an easy laid-back groove and a beautifully urban feel.
A1: Prism
A2: Shihosai
B4: Wakare Wa Itsumo
