A superb 1981 release by Brazilian composer and pianist Nelson Ayres, who also left behind outstanding work in Philips’ Musica Popular Brasileira Contemporanea series, dedicated to introducing a new generation of Brazilian artists. A wonderfully uplifting album filled with beautifully crafted Brazilian fusion throughout. Highlights include A3, which unfolds from an organic intro of percussion and flute into a light, graceful crossover jazz groove, and B1, where deeply reverberant flute and softly phrased soprano sax glide with remarkable elegance. The gorgeous ballad A2 is another standout, featuring an emotionally rich vocal set against strings and piano, and is simply melting. A deeply satisfying and enveloping listen from start to finish. Highly recommended.
A2: Mantiqueira
B1: A Arte de Voar
