This is the fourth volume of Tibetan Buddhist music released in 1978 from Nonesuch's Exprolorer Series, a series of ethnic music/field recordings by David Lewiston. It was recorded by David Lewiston in Dharamsala, Himachal Pradesh, northwest India. It is a recording of a Tibetan Buddhist ritual of exorcism, featuring a low-pitched chanting voice with a lot of overtones that seems to reverberate through the mountainous region, and the high-pitched sound of gold percussion instruments and wind instruments. Tibetan Buddhist music has deeply influenced avant-garde musicians such as Don Cherry, jazz musicians such as Don Cherry, Musica Elettronica, Viva and its member Alvin Curran, but the real thing itself sounds extremely avant-garde.
