Shinichi Yuize is the eldest son of Sohzan Yuize, a shakuhachi player of the Miyama school, and Kikue Yuize, a koto player of the Ikuta school. He learned shakuhachi and koto at an early age, and studied under Michio Miyagi, a koto player, when he was a student at the Tokyo Music School. In the 1950s, he studied orchestration and contemporary music composition under Henry Cowell. Since then, he has performed with various symphony orchestras, and has also composed many contemporary Japanese compositions. This is a 3-LP bokset released in 1971, which contains his compositions. Kuniyama Yamamoto participated fully in this project. "Ishikarigawa", a long suite of 14 movements that takes up two records, is a piece that expresses the nature of Hokkaido while also using Western techniques, but my impression is that it does not deviate from classical Japanese music. Of particular interest are the two pieces on the B-side of disc 3. F1, featuring Yasuko Nakajima's 17-string solo, has a minimalist feel to it. The duet F2, featuring Hozan Yamamoto's shakuhachi and Tadase's koto, has a somewhat exotic feel.
