Born in Kanazawa in 1900, Tosha Shuju began studying the shinobue flute at the age of fourteen. Around 1943, he studied under Tosha Shuho and Kataoka Tokichi, formally mastering not only the flute but also the shamisen and percussion used in nagauta, thus becoming an important figure in preserving Japanese classical music for future generations. This album was released in 1974. Side A features solo shinobue performances, including inaka-bue pieces used in nagauta and kabuki, celebratory pieces played at festive banquets, yatai-bayashi, and kagura-bayashi. Side B presents solo nōkan performances, featuring pieces performed in Noh and kabuki. The distinctive vibrato and subtle fluctuations of the transverse flute create a profoundly evocative atmosphere—an exceptional recording.
