舞楽 / 曼荼羅交響曲

This album was released in 1980 and contains two works by Toshiro Mayuzumi, one of the most famous composers and contemporary musicians in postwar Japan, who introduced music concrete, electronic music and avant-garde music to Japan in the early 50's. Mayuzumi himself released many compositions influenced by these music genres. The A-side "Bugaku" is a ballet music composed in 1963, commissioned by the New York City Ballet, and is an orchestral work that incorporates Gagaku, a traditional Japanese music, into a Western musical form. The B-side "Mandala Symphony" was premiered in 1960 by the NHK Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Hiroyuki Iwashiro, and expresses the Buddhist world following "Nehan Symphony". Both of these works, with their contrast of stillness and movement and dramatic development unique to Asia, are masterpieces that I recommend along with Toru Takemitsu's film music.

A: 舞楽
B: 曼荼羅交響曲
