This album was released in 1971 on Victor Records' "Contemporary Japanese Music Series, by Toshiro Mayuzumi, one of the most famous composers and contemporary musicians in postwar Japan, who introduced music concrete, electronic music and avant-garde music to Japan in the early 1950s, and who himself released many compositions influenced by them. Commissioned by the National Theatre of Japan, this work was first performed in 1970 by the Imperial Household Agency's Gagaku Music Department. The work is based on and expands on the traditional instruments of gagaku, such as the shō, hichiriki, biwa, SoHo's, and kakko, but it finds common ground between the chordal structure of the shō and the tonal clusters that were one of the mainstays of contemporary music in the late 20th century. Like Toru Takemitsu's "In a Autumn Garden" it is a masterpiece that expresses a world of sound that brilliantly sublimates the heterogeneity of folk/traditional music.
