This is a 1978 album by the multi-instrumentalist Roscoe Mitchell, a central figure in the Art Ensemble of Chicago. The album features members of AEOC, including Joseph Jarman, Malachi Favors, and Don Moye, as well as artists affiliated with AACM such as Henry Threadgill, Anthony Braxton, Leo Smith, Thurman Barker, Douglas Ewart, and George Lewis. The recording took place in three different studios during the summer of 1978, with engineering by Rudy Van Gelder, renowned for his work on numerous jazz classics. The album consists of four sides, each offering something unique. Side A and B feature free ensemble performances with a multitude of lead instruments, Side C showcases all eight members playing percussion only, and Side D presents a solo soprano saxophone performance by Mitchell. The entire album is outstanding, transcending not only the boundaries of jazz but also the realm of contemporary music, representing the successful culmination of AACM's artistic exploration. The album's recording scene, featured inside the gatefold sleeve, is also impressive.
