A masterpiece album released in 1969 by American composer Salvatore Martirano, who served as a professor at the University of Illinois for many years and was also dedicated to the design and construction of electronic instruments, including the development of the SAL-MAR Construction, a hybrid voltage-controlled oscillator. The most striking piece on this album is undoubtedly Side A’s “L’s GA (Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address),” composed in 1967. Subtitled “A Politician Covered in Gas, a Helium Bomb, and a Two-Channel Tape,” this 24-minute-plus musique concrète composition is built upon eerie vocal utterances and electronic sounds, evoking the groans of a subterranean phantom. B1, “Ballad,” composed in 1966, leans toward avant-jazz and features an ensemble of jazz and classical musicians, including Donald Smith—younger brother of Lonnie Liston Smith and an exceptional vocalist in his own right. B2, “Octet,” is a piece of chamber-style contemporary music scored for cello, celesta, bass clarinet, contra-alto clarinet, flute, marimba, violin, and bass.
