A masterpiece album released in 1976 by the TOKK Ensemble, the performing group of the Tokyo Music Planning Institute, established by Japanese composers Maki Ishii and Yoshiaki Irino. In addition to works by the two founders, the album includes chamber music compositions by Toru Takemitsu and Toshi Ichiyanagi. Featuring an exceptional lineup of genre-defying musicians such as Takehisa Kosugi, Katsuya Yokoyama, Kinshi Tsuruta, Yasunori Yamaguchi, Ayako Shinozaki, and Hiroshi Koizumi. Track A1, composed by Ichiyanagi in 1973 as a commissioned work for the TOKK Ensemble, presents an avant-garde ensemble that blends shakuhachi, piano, harp, flute, percussion, and electric violin. Notably, Ichiyanagi's piano and Kosugi's violin parts are performed improvisationally without a score. Track B2, a groundbreaking piece, combines two works by Takemitsu: the percussion piece Munari by Munari and the piano piece Corona. Both were composed in different eras using graphic scores and are uniquely cross-bred within the same temporal framework. The performances throughout are outstanding. Highly recommended.
