Hozan Yamamoto, a shakuhachi player of the Tozan School, has been constantly challenging himself to create new music, not only classical music but also jazz, contemporary music, and avant-garde, and in 2002 he was awarded the title of Living National Treasure.

This is a two-disc album released in 1975, containing a total of nine original compositions from the 1960s and 1970s, and shows the struggles he went through to reach his goal in the old world of Japanese music. In addition to like-minded traditional instrumentalists such as Katsuya Yokoyama, Shinichi Yuize, and Tadao Sawai, the album also features a number of players who have gone beyond the boundaries of classical music to explore new areas of Japanese music. It is a wonderful collection of endlessly organic ensembles by shakuhachi and koto, and it does not feel old at all. Especially, the shakuhachi ensemble on Disc 1 is very easy to listen to. This is a world beyond ambient music.
