Released in 1974 as the second installment in The World of Indian Music series, originally produced by Nippon Columbia in 1970, this album focuses on the bansuri, a transverse flute made from a long section of bamboo of even thickness. Performances are by Raghunath Seth on bansuri, Murli Maharaj on tabla, and Madhulika Chandra on tanpura. Side A features performances of “Raga Yama,” one of the most representative ragas of North Indian classical music with a fundamental structure, and “Rupak Tala.” Side B includes “Raga Kalawati,” said to be a variation of the North Indian raga Khamaj, along with “Teental Tala.” The melodies of the bansuri, with their exceptionally beautiful and deeply resonant tone, are truly pleasant throughout.
