Watazumido-Shuso is a bamboo flute player who established his own unique style called "Watazumido" with a distinctive philosophy and playing technique. He was highly regarded by composers like Toru Takemitsu and ethnomusicologist Fumio Koizumi. This album was released in 1968. Watazumido-Shuso aimed to unite the tangible and intangible aspects of skill and spirit through the act of playing an instrument called "Hocchiku," based on the foundation of the "practical philosophy" that hones the state of one's heart. This philosophy is a common thread in all of his works in the realm of Kaiteki (the Way of Enlightenment through sound).
In this album, you will find compositions that leap from the Kyushu region, including the foundational "Satsuji," which became the origin of all subsequent styles, the contrasting and extreme melody "Watazumi no Cho," and the traditional piece known as "Kokuchi," which is considered Japan's oldest. These are precious compositions showcasing masterpieces and hidden gems in the world of Hocchiku, a bamboo flute with a single bore. Please lend your ears to the transcendental sounds of the revered teacher that may have influenced avant-garde music.
