This album, released in 1976 by the education division of Deutsche Grammophon, features Yuji Takahashi, one of Japan's most prominent contemporary musicians. Having studied under Iannis Xenakis, Takahashi has been active at the forefront of the music scene since the early 1970s and has significantly influenced Ryuichi Sakamoto. The album presents piano arrangements of works by Johann Sebastian Bach, the most significant composer of the Baroque era, including "Cantatas," "St. Matthew Passion," and "Sonatas for Solo Violin." Tracks A1 and A6 were arranged by Takahashi himself, A2 and A5 by Wilhelm Kempff, A3 by Myra Hess, and A4/B1/B2 by Ferruccio Busoni. Just as Bach himself was an exceptional arranger, his works reveal their transformative qualities when reinterpreted.
