American pianist George Cables—renowned for his work with Art Pepper, Freddie Hubbard, Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers and countless other greats, and also for his own standout releases on labels such as Why Not—leads this excellent 1985 session. The lineup features Joe Farrell (flute), Rufus Reid (bass), Eddie Gladden (drums), Ernie Watts (tenor sax), Tony Dumas (bass) and Peter Erskine (drums). Standouts include A2, graced by Farrell’s cool, refreshing flute, and A3, driven by the sharp, funky rhythm team of Dumas and Erskine. Throughout, Cables’ elegant piano—whether in ensemble or solo—floats within a deeply grooving, black-spirit feel, yet carried by a breezy crossover touch. A superb set from start to finish. Highly recommended.
