John Handy & Ali Akbar Khan

John Handy, an alto saxophonist in California, USA, who attracted attention in the 50's when he joined the group of Charles Mingus, and became interested in Eastern/Indian philosophy after that, and Ali Akbar Khan, a Bengali sarod player based in San Francisco for a long time, recorded together in 1975. Zakir Hussain (tabla) and Yagish S. Sahota (tambura) are participating in this project. The hippie movement that began in the 60's led to a deep penetration of oriental folk music in the rock and jazz scene in California, and this album is an example of this influence. If you listen to the parts with just Ali Akbar Khan, Zakkir Hussain and Yagish S. Sahota, it is completely Indian, but the soft melody of John Handy's saxophone adds a touch of colour. This is a wonderfully gentle and moving performance.
